I was humiliated getting the call about the bill from the lab. I felt lied to. I'd never experienced such impersonal, business-like practices in a medical setting. The billing guy just explained everything away, not once offering any comfort or apologies for the obscurity. Meanwhile, the lab guy at the other company is doing everything he can to resolve the issue and make me feel better.
