The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department (ED) of the Specialty Care Directorate (SCD) functions as an integral member of the Interdisciplinary Medical Team to provide healthcare which maximizes the quality of life for Veterans, Active Duty and Retired Department of Defense (DOD) beneficiaries, and their eligible family members of all ages with acute physical illnesses. The RN role includes use of the nursing process for the initial and ongoing, physical and psychosocial assessment/reassessment to determine the patient's medical needs. It is the synthesis of data from various assessments, problem identification, care planning, monitoring and evaluation of the patient's support systems, strengths, evaluation of the patient's progress, advocacy, discharge planning, collaboration with other healthcare providers and the strict observance and implementation of infection control guidelines that define the RN role in the SCD area.
